There Is Superstition Writing On The Wall

Very superstitious, writing's on the wall. Very superstitious, ladder's 'bout to fall.

Context

This line was sung and written by Stevie Wonder in the song "Superstition" from the album Talking Book (1972).

In "Superstition," Stevie Wonder brings the funk and the life lessons as he sings about how being afraid of things like broken mirrors, walking under ladders, and the number 13 can stop you from living your life to the fullest.

Stevie Wonder's smooth vocal stylings and an amazing horn section make the clichéd superstitions he mentions even more entertaining. If your mirror is broken, then get a new one. And black cats can be super cute, you know.

And poking fun at these old wives' tales struck a chord with music fans, who made "Superstition" the top song on the Billboard Hot 100 in January of 1973.

Where you've heard it

If you like to kick it old school, "Superstition" is a big hit on oldies radio stations, especially around Friday the 13th.

Additional Notable References:

  • This song was used in a 2013 commercial for Bud Lite that played to NFL fans' superstitions just before the Super Bowl.
  • The Sesame Street crew gets down to "Supersition." Those kids are so lucky.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Don't let little, random things make you have a bad day. Just dance to this song instead.
